Once again we have more guest speaker news to share. This time we we’re honoured to welcome a very special guest speaker to one of our Writing Groups, the award-winning lecturer Kelly Parker.
Black stereotypes still prevail in media and it is crucial to gain an understanding of this and how to avoid them as a thoughtful writer in a modern world. Kelly helps to raise historical awareness of stereotypes and demonstrate the importance of getting it right and the damage of getting it wrong. Together, the group discussed practical techniques involved in the creation and representational use of equality and diversity within writing.
About the speaker …
Kelly has taught a variety of classes and learners in schools, higher education, university, and the prison and social sector for around 10 years.
Kelly Parker is currently completing her doctorate. Besides her PhD, Kelly guest lectures in Black British media representation and stereotyping; is an ambassador for the charity Models of Diversity, whose mission is to promote greater levels of equality, diversity and inclusion across the fashion and media sectors; and acts as a consulting editor to the MAI Feminism and Visual Culture journal.
Kelly’s research explores Black British representation within advertising, focusing on the prevalence of stereotypes. The research holds a lens to the lived impact of ongoing stereotypical representations on Black British communities in the United Kingdom. Kelly has published works that intersect gender and feminism, Black history and cultural studies, and the impact of the coronavirus pandemic’s messaging in the United Kingdom on Black communities.
Kelly is widely published within the Academic and business community. You can view a little of her accessible work here, here, and here.
We couldn’t wait to meet her and learn about her many projects to enable us to be more thoughtful and representative in our writing – it matters!
