We had a wonderful day celebrating our writers.
World Book Day is a reminder of the transformative power of books and reading. It inspires a global community to embrace literature and recognize its value in shaping the future. Whether you are young or old, there’s always something new to discover in the pages of a book.
So, pick up a book, share your favourite stories, and celebrate the beauty of reading!
Origins of World Book Day:
The idea for World Book Day originated from UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) in 1995. UNESCO declared April 23rd as World Book Day in honor of two literary giants: William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes, who both died on this date in 1616 (although on different calendars).
The goal of World Book Day was to recognize the cultural significance of books and the importance of reading in shaping knowledge and society. It also serves as a reminder of the importance of literacy, which is key to both personal and societal development.
The Origins of World Book Day in England:
World Book Day was introduced in the UK in 1995 and has since become a national event. While the global celebration of World Book Day aligns with April 23rd (the anniversary of the deaths of William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes), in the UK, the celebration takes place earlier in the year, typically the first Thursday in March.
